I don’t know about you but I am always budgeting and looking to make savings wherever I possibly can. The biggest way I can save money is by saving money around the home but it can be difficult to get everyone on board.

Here are my top tips for saving money around the home. Some of them you may have thought of and some you may not have, I hope I can help you a little.

Make a shopping list – and meal plan

Avoid spending money on frivolous purchases at the supermarket by making a meal plan and a shopping list and keeping to it. We’ve all been there where we’ve picked something up at the supermarket that we hadn’t planned on buying and then it’s sat, abandoned in our pantry for months afterwards and is a big waste of money. By keeping to your strict list, you’ll avoid any money mistakes.

Cook In Bulk – Potentially Buy In Bulk

Buying in bulk is something that you need to think about – weighing up the pros and cons – but if you know you go to the supermarket every week for x amount of pork, this many sausages, that much chicken, why not go and buy it in bulk instead? You will probably get a discount or good deal for bulk buying then it enables you to cook in bulk too by batch cooking. Make some of your family’s favourite meals and keep some in the fridge to reheat for dinner later in the week and some in the freezer for a few weeks time. You will be amazed at the money you will save!

If It’s Broke, Fix It

It can be tempting to go straight out and buy it new when something we own breaks but often, it can easily be fixed with a little time and effort. Before spending your hard earned cash on a new item, try to fix it first – see if you can save some of the household budget from getting spent. On that note…

Repair Sooner Rather Than Later

Certain household jobs are easy to do and don’t require a professional to come in. But it is important to remember that you should repair any small things as soon as possible – leaving it could lead to the problem getting worse and being too big for you to handle which means you have to fork out for a professional to come and sort it out.

Switch It Off

It seems so obvious and is perhaps the most overused money saving tip out there but if you aren’t using it, switch it off – and unplug it too if you can! It may only be mere pennies that you are spending, powering all of the items you aren’t using but those pennies soon add up. You will be amazed at the savings that can be had here by turning off appliances!
